This course will cover the security elements of an Internet of Things (IoT) system, including sensors, controllers, and network interfaces.

This National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium (NCPC) training course is developed and delivered by Norwich University Applied Research Institutes. This session is a pilot for certification.

Course Description

This course will introduce the learner to IoT concepts, systems, considerations, and security issues. 

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

(1)Describe concepts related to IoT communication;
(2)Describe data collection methods by IoT devices;
(3)Describe the process used by threat actors to attack IoT devices and services;
(4)Describe methods for defending IoT systems.

A practical exercise lab is included for students to practice research on IoT systems using standard tools. Students will leverage that research to interact with a vulnerable system.
Students will be able to access the virtual-private cloud training environment from their own computers through almost any browser. 

Target Audience

This course is designed for state, local, regional, tribal, territorial, and private organizations. 
Targeting personnel working in an IT environment where IoT may be installed, the course will expand their awareness of this additional infrastructure in their environment and how it can impact operations. 

Prerequisites

Participants should have a basic understanding of computer security concepts and networking skills. No prior programming experience is required. 
United States citizen, permanent resident, or prior approval is required to attend this class.

Required Materials

Participants are required to have a laptop computer that can access a public wifi connection.
