This course explores essential cybersecurity and IT practices for securing, monitoring, and maintaining Internet of Things (IoT) environments.

This National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium (NCPC) training course is developed and delivered by Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI). NCPC courses are fully funded by DHS/FEMA and provided at no direct cost to participants.

Course Description
This course covers Security by Design for IoT deployments, including device hardening, network segmentation, and security monitoring. It explores cyber-physical risks to critical infrastructure and strategies to mitigate threats and strengthen resilience while it also examines IoT network monitoring and behavioral analysis, including trafic baselines, anomaly detectioin, and identifying security concerns.

Learnins explore how network data supports troubleshooting, incident response, and stronger IoT security.

A practical exercise lab is included for students to practice research on IoT systems using standard tools.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
-Explain how IoT applications, capabilities, and communication inform secure deployment, logical segmentation, and integration into continuous monitoringframeworks;
-Describe data collection methods and storage practices;
-Describe the process used by threat actors to attack IoT devices and services; and how to defend IoT systems from threats.

Target Audience
This course was developed for IoT owner-operators, IT and cybersecurity support staff, emergency management personnel, and critical infrastructure personnel who apply established procedures to identify vulnerabilities, implement protective measures, monitor for abnormal conditions, and support response or escalation under supervision.

Prerequisites: Participants with a basic understanding of computer security concepts, networking skills, and Linux command line tools.

Suggested, but not required, courses are AWR-402 INtroduction to Internet of Things and AWR-138 Network Assurance. networks and security will excel. United States citizen, permanent resident, or prior approval is required to attend this class.

Required Materials
Participants are required to have a laptop computer that can access a public wifi connection.

NUARI, as a member of the National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium (NCPC), is a FEMA training provider.

A FEMA Student Identification (SID) number is necessary for registering and participating in any training offered by FEMA, as well as for the registration systems and enrollment processes of all FEMA training providers. The FEMA SID will serve as your unique identifier and be used to maintain the record of any FEMA training you attend. Obtaining and registering with FEMA’s Student Identification system is a one-time step, and the number can then be used to take training with FEMA or any FEMA training provider. Registering with a FEMA SID number ensures NUARI and the NCPC can continue to provide training at no cost, made available through congressionally designated funding awarded by FEMA’s U.S. Department of Homeland Security National Training and Education Division. For further information about the FEMA SID number, please see https://cdp.dhs.gov/FEMASID/
