On Thursday, November 30th, NUARI president Phil Susmann was a featured panelist at CYDEF 2023 in Tokyo, Japan.
This year's CYDEF theme was "International Order & Active Cyber Defense." Japan's National Security Strategy, released at the end of 2022, stated, "Japan must have the capability of active cyber defense to eliminate the threat of severe cyber attacks that may cause security concerns to the country or critical infrastructure.
CYDEF is Japan's most significant cyber defense conference, featuring cyber defense experts from around the world, with the cooperation of research institutions such as the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and the U.S. Army Cyber Institute.
Phil delivered a presentation focusing on "Active Cyber Defense in a Country's Cyber Strategy," which supplemented content from speakers from different regions that discussed what is behind the policies and strategies implemented in the cyber domain in their respective countries. Additionally, the presenters explored the various measures they are taking for active cyber defense and the expected outcomes and impacts of these measures.
This year's conference featured representatives from research institutions such as The European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats (Hybrid CoE) from Finland, the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) in Estonia, the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence (NATO StratCom) in Latvia, the NATO Command and Control Centre of Excellence (NATO C2CoE) in the Netherlands, and the Army Cyber Institute at West Point.
At last year's conference, Phil moderated a virtual panel of international experts to discuss "Critical Infrastructure Protection Activities and Military Support."
