In Memoriam: General Al Gray - A Champion for NUARI and Cybersecurity Education

Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI) is deeply saddened by the passing of General Al Gray, a beacon of leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment. General Gray's dedication to NUARI and its mission spanned over a decade, and his contributions have had a lasting impact on our organization and the broader cybersecurity landscape.

General Gray's legacy is intertwined with NUARI's very fabric. After serving 15 distinguished years on the Norwich University Board of Trustees, he assumed a pivotal role on the NUARI Board of Directors. His dedication was unwavering, and his impact was immeasurable.

General Gray understood the importance of a well-educated cybersecurity workforce and fueled his unwavering support for Norwich University's and NUARI's educational initiatives. He recognized the need to equip future generations with the skills and knowledge to confront ever-present cyber threats. He made the introductions that led to the beginning of the DECIDE Platform for exercises, understanding that critical infrastructure protection meant practice for when things went wrong. His encouragement for developing robust cyber degree programs at Norwich University continues to ensure a pipeline of talented professionals entering the field. He was an early supporter of online education, recognizing that it was a valuable tool to get education to the overworked and continuously deployed forces.

Channeling his deep experience in the Marines, General Gray understood the value of and fostered a spirit of collaboration between NUARI and Norwich University. He understood the power of a unified approach to cybersecurity education and research. His leadership was instrumental in securing Norwich University's designation as an NSA Center of Academic Excellence, a testament to the quality and commitment of the university's programs. He understood that the value of Norwich and NUARI was not in the funds but in what they could do to support the Republic.

General Gray's impact extended far beyond his official role. He mentored many within NUARI, offering invaluable guidance and support. His enthusiasm and dedication were contagious, inspiring all those privileged to work alongside him. He often said, "take what you get, but make what you want," words that epitomized his idealistic realism.

His legacy lives on in the strong foundation he helped build at NUARI. His unwavering commitment to innovation, education, and collaboration continues to shape our mission and ethos to "attack, attack, attack." We are forever grateful for his service and friendship.
